A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Katie Phillips ’22, an undeclared arts & sciences major from Athens, Ga., spent four weeks in West Africa as part of the Bucknell in the Côte d’Ivoire program. Working alongside a Bucknell political science professor and seven other Bucknell students, Katie helped Ivorian orphans develop their skills in the English language. Along the way, she deepened her understanding of subjects such as colonialism, globalization and the effects of development on the environment.

Katie says every moment — whether teaching orphans English, swimming in the ocean or exploring the local area with friends — was transformative.

“Studying abroad gives you an experience you won’t have in class,” she says. “Going and seeing a culture for yourself really makes you understand how what you’re learning in the classroom applies to the real world.”
