Ellis joined the biology faculty in 1968. “He demanded effort and excellence from students and usually got it,” recalls Wayne McDiffett, professor emeritus of biology. “He also earned great respect from his colleagues for his contributions to the department other than his teaching.”
Those contributions included both Ellis’ research concerning the mechanisms of plant phototropism (why and how plants move toward light) as well as his efforts to refine the department’s curriculum.
Karin Wegener Knisely ’79 recalls Ellis as a masterful teacher whose ability to draw biochemical pathways from memory left her in awe. She cherished his mentorship not only as a student, but later in her work directing Bucknell’s biology department lab.
Ellis helped establish Bucknell’s Department of Environmental Studies & Sciences, serving as lead teacher in two interdisciplinary courses that launched the program in 1979.
Ellis retired from Bucknell as professor emeritus of biology in 2005. He volunteered as a scorekeeper for several Bucknell athletics teams and was a member of the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame Committee. He is survived by wife Judy Kerr Ellis ’68, two daughters, two stepdaughters and two stepgrandchildren.
